Frequent SME questions
Does an SME have to answer an EcoVadis questionnaire?
No law requires it directly. In practice, a client or buyer often requires it as a condition to keep working together. Not answering — or answering weakly — can therefore weaken a contract. The issue is commercial, not regulatory.
Are ESG questionnaires becoming mandatory for SMEs?
For most SMEs they are not legally mandatory. But client, buyer and supply-chain requirements make them increasingly common. In practice, answering becomes a condition to keep and win contracts.
Is VSME mandatory for my SME?
No. VSME is a voluntary sustainability reporting standard designed for SMEs. It provides a simplified framework to answer requests from clients or banks, without the complexity of large frameworks such as CSRD.
What ESG information should an SME be able to provide?
Requests usually cover governance, environment, energy, CO₂ emissions, responsible purchasing, human resources and suppliers. Most SMEs already hold part of this information: the challenge is organising it so it can be provided quickly and consistently.
How long does it take to answer a client ESG questionnaire?
It mainly depends on how organised your information is. When evidence is scattered, each questionnaire starts from scratch and takes several days. With a reusable organisation, response time drops sharply with every new request.
Do you need to already be “exemplary” in ESG to answer well?
