ISO 14065 sets requirements for bodies that validate or verify GHG information. It works with ISO/IEC 17029 (the general VVB foundation) and engagement standards (notably ISO 14064-3).
Goal: a credible, impartial and competent system — ready for accreditation and surveillance.
What is ISO 14065?
ISO 14065 defines organisational requirements for validation and verification bodies operating on greenhouse gases and, depending on scope, related environmental information.
It does not replace ISO 17029: it adds the sector framework needed when the object of validation/verification is climate- and GHG-related.
ISO 14065 and ISO 17029: how they fit together
In practice, a carbon VVB must demonstrate:
- a management system conforming to ISO 17029 (governance, impartiality, processes, decisions);
- ISO 14065 requirements adapted to the GHG schemes covered;
- team competences aligned (often via ISO 14066);
- traceable evidence on engagements (ISO 14064-3 and client schemes).
A weak 17029 foundation will not hold under 14065 — and GHG expertise without a robust VVB system fails assessment.
